Hazel Oliver of Badger & Birch

Other Media

Hazel explores the use of reclaimed natural and recycled elements that she has foraged and collected from her local surroundings in Falmouth. She celebrates texture by combining found and fallen elements into cast forms and vessels in eco resin. Her art is a considered blend of the more traditional craft techniques of casting, carving, hand-built clay moulds and turning which then permeate into her contemporary forms in eco resin.

Hazel draws inspiration from the layered rock and landscape palettes of Cornwall, experimenting with hidden textures, scale and form. Her latest collection ‘mantle’ uses found lichens, windfall woods, twigs, branches, soils, sands, driftwood as well as coffee grounds and oyster and mussel shells recycled from the food waste of her local seafront restaurant. These materials are embedded within the eco resin and each piece is hand sanded and carved back to reveal the textures within. Hazel is based in Falmouth and works from her home studio called ‘Badger & Birch Studio’.
