Pam Betowski

Textiles

Pamela Jane Betowski trained at Hornsey College of Art, at Portsmouth Polytechnic where she gained a BA Fine Art painting, and at Birmingham Polytechnic where she was awarded a PGCE and Art Teachers Diploma. She subsequently taught textiles, art & design and music in the London Borough of Haringey for six years before leaving to work as a musician and artist/maker. Throughout her life, she has been interested in working with yarn and textiles and has more recently discovered shaft loom weaving. Pam now weaves handwoven wall art and scarves using sustainable yarns on her 8 shaft floor loom in the far West of Cornwall. Her Double Weaving has been featured in British Fibre Art Magazine.

“I am fascinated by the interaction of threads of different colours and textures, in weaving and specifically in double weave with its unique possibilities for interplay between two layers of varying colours. I find it exciting to set up organised warp and weft patterns which can be disrupted by an improvisational approach while designing at the loom. Many of my double weave wall hanging designs are concerned with creating optical illusions, for which the double weave technique has potential for creating areas of pure colour. As a former musician and composer I find many parallels in weaving – in texture, form and in the rhythm of the actual process of weaving with coloured threads flowing, like notes from the shuttle.”
